Ultra Beasts receive a massive upgrade in Pokémon Darkness

The sixth main expansion of the Pokémon TCG: Sun & Moon—Dark Shadows was released on May 4, 2018. The set focused on the Kalos region and brought fan-favorite Pokémon like Greninja into the Sun & Moon era . The expansion included a slew of Ultra Beasts and Ultra Beast Support cards , including powerful new releases like Ultra Necrozma GX . Booster packs had an MSRP of €3.50 , and, as with previous Pokémon releases , there were many additional products with new promo cards and Dark Shadows boosters .

A Prism Star Card that beats them all

Fighting-type Pokémon played a significant role in the metagame at the time. They became even stronger with the introduction of Diancie ◇ . This Pokémon offered 20 points of extra damage to each Fighting-type Pokémon while on the Bench, giving the Fighting-type the damage it needed to break through high-HP Pokémon. This card definitely changed the meta, and players could expect to see it frequently in the game.

Along with Diancie, players also received other Fighting-type Pokémon like Zygarde-GX , which debuted with three attacks— Cell Shot , Ground Blast , and Judgment-GX . This card also offered a powerful combo with Malamar , allowing Zygarde-GX players to deal massive amounts of damage. Such a deck looked promising, and Zygarde-GX itself was a strong contender for Fighting-type decks .

Ultra Beast mechanics generate more value

Along with powerful new Ultra Beasts like Necrozma GX, players received powerful support cards for Ultra Beasts. One of these was Ultra Dimension , a Stadium card that allowed players to search their deck for Ultra Beasts. Search effects on Stadium cards were very powerful up until then and a huge advantage in decks with lots of Ultra Beasts.

Beast Energy ◇ was the second notable Prism Star card in this set, functioning like a Choice Band for Ultra Beasts while offering Energy of any form. Another flagship card from Terror of Dark Light was Beast Ring . This card was threateningly powerful, as it would select two Standard Energy cards and immediately attach them to an Ultra Beast, provided the opponent still had three or four Prize cards. A surprisingly simple condition for such a game-changing effect.

The introduction of new Ultra Beasts , Prism Star cards , and powerful Support cards has made gameplay more diverse and strategic. Whether you're a player or a collector, this expansion offers something for everyone.

"Terror of Darkness" has had a significant impact on the Pokémon TCG metagame . The new Ultra Beasts and their Supporter cards, in particular, have enabled new deck strategies and strengthened existing decks. The rarest Pokémon from Terror of Darkness are extremely popular with some fans and less so with others. We consider the set a good one, but not one of the sets that has left a large footprint.
